Other Top Tens: AFI's 100 Greatest American Movies Top Ten

This is the top ten of the American Film Institute's 100 Years . . . 100 Movies list of the all time best American films.  They say it was "selected by a blue-ribbon panel of leaders from across the film community."

  1. Citizen Kane (1941)
  2. Casablanca (1942)
  3. The Godfather (1972)
  4. Gone with the Wind (1939)
  5. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
  6. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
  7. The Graduate (1967)
  8. On the Waterfront (1954)
  9. Schindler's List (1993)
  10. Singin' in the Rain (1952)

My Notes

The top of this list went pretty much as one would expect, but, as is typical of the film industry as opposed to the film industry, there were some things that really surprised me--even early in the list.  Schindler's List was critically praised, but I definitely would expect it to require more seasoning before the AFI would actually place it as the ninth best film of all time!  Later on, there were more surprises for me in what even made the list:  Rocky (1976) and Forrest Gump (1994) being most notable.  I will admit to the fact that I have not seen seven of these top ten movies and have not seen most of the 100 films on the list, so I'm not going to comment on the list's validity, though just having stated that is probably going to undermine any possible credibility that I have.

These are the films that appeared on their list that also appeared on my top ten list or came close:

  • Amadeus (1984) ranked #3 on my list and #53 here.
  • One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) nearly made my list and ranked #20 here.
  • To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) nearly made my list and ranked #34 here.
  • Jaws (1975) nearly made my list and ranked #48 here.
  • Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ranked #8 on my list and ranked #50 here.
  • Rocky (1976) nearly made my list and ranked #78 here.
  • Goodfellas (1990) nearly made my list and ranked #94 here.
